I gotta stand up for Robert and Dances with Films here. I got rejected from DWF and a bigger, international festival ended up selecting us for our world premiere. It is only because I got rejected from DWF and I didn't get bitter/stop working on my film did the film make it to Fancy Fest X. When you screen as many movies as we have, you learn that some mistakes are just that - mistakes. These are not subjective, matter-of-taste, things. 100% of the people screening movies with mistakes will say, "That's not right."

You can hire a PR firm, a sales and/or producer's agent and get into any major festival, but you, as the person who never gave up, needs to continue. It's very easy to toss in the towel - especially for us self-starters. There's only one thing from stopping us from saying, "Screw it all. This is just too damn hard." This "thing" is our DNA. We need to tell stories.

To be a filmmaker is also to be a marketer and publicist. You can never stop hustling. It's been 2 yrs since Spirit Camp played at DWF, and I'm still promoting, marketing, and selling DVDs. You can't just sit back and wait for things to happen.

This is super time-consuming. Most festivals don't send any response at all if your film doesn't get in. Our pass letters (e-mails) haven't gone out yet, but they will this week. They take time to review before sending. So if you haven't heard anything then there's a good chance you will receive a pass notification soon. Knowing that ahead of time helps filmmakers who might be under consideration by other festivals.
