Learning From Last Year

And this point, it's worth it to take a look at a post from about this time last year.

Why and What Next?

Fingers and toes (and eyes?) still crossed! Thinking positive thoughts... :-) Love how open and communicative you guys are through this normally blacked-out part of the process.

We are listening to Robert's advice about getting innovative on marketing our film. We have not heard about our film Gibsonburg yet sooooo, I hope its ok to use the blog here to tell everyone that TODAY we announced that we are giving away the 1968 Firebird featured in our film. Tell everyone you know to go to the Gibsonburg facebook page and take a minute to fill out the online entry form!

We hope to get 12,000 likes! The car runs like a top! Make sure to enter!

We get it, when do you send out the pass letters then?

It's perfectly fine to post your promo here.

Gibsonburg is a good film. You should be as proud as the original team for your achievement. And that give-away is the wildest indie film promotion I've ever heard of!

I'm not sure when the pass letters go out - only that they don't go out until the line up is locked. We do still have some slots we're working on, so ... sorry ... the painful wait continues.

I did enjoy seeing my old stomping grounds in that film. NCSA - before the U and before they had a film school.

If Bob Francisconi is still there, tell him I said hi - and send me out some BBQ and Sugar Cake.

That sounds like a semi-veiled decline.
I still hope.

The New York City film "Transatlantic Coffee" is holding on tight, hoping to receive that E-mail from DWF. This is when the blood, sweat and tears of hundreds who've worked on the picture from coast to coast start bitting their fingernails. What an experience to be involved with such an organization like Dances. Not to mention, to meet all of the other wonderful filmmakers at what is arguably the most honest, truthful independent film festival for artists like us all. Look around at the other options - evaluate the festivals. It's easy to come to such conclusion.

Good luck everyone - we mean it from the bottom of our hearts. You should and need to be proud of yourselves. There is nothing else we could've ever of hoped for than to be there with you all sharing our west coast premier with many of yours. Don't forget, we do this because we love it. In this business, it's so easy to give up - to toss in the towel. We do it because it's in our blood. Many ask "How do you do it?". For many of us, it's hard to answer such a question because it's simply what we "need" to do. If we could describe it verbally, we wouldn't need to make moving pictures.

When a festival as prestigious as DWF recognizes our work - well,...it makes everything all worth it. Peace to all. Our team is very proud of yours because we know ....God only knows what it takes to get this far. To Leslee and Robert and all of the programmers, you are golden in our eyes. Love you all - to the fest, to fellow filmmakers and every single crew member who makes it this far in hopes that a fest like DWF sees what we all see in our work.

Hope springs eternal, but as time goes by, how can one assume anything but the worst. I see mine as a festival litmus test, can a commercially viable genre film with a built in audience find festival acceptance over avant garde or thoughtful dramas?

I don't know which film is yours, so this isn't a comment on your film in any way - but you should know those aren't the standards by any stretch of the imagination. If anything, DWF leans more toward commercial films than anything else - though I have no idea what a "built in audience" is. It's my experience that all audiences have to be ripped off their couches with brute force.

Looking at the list as it begins to gell, some of my favorite submissions aren't on it. That hurts. But every year we have more good films than we have time to screen them. Final selections are like NBA players fighting for a rebound.

Sometimes it's not the quality or type of movie. The ball just doesn't bounce your way.

Again - I don't know which film is yours, and all announcements have not gone out yet. This is just a general response to the idea that we're only looking for a certain kind of movie. We are - good ones - but there are a lot of those, and we accept as wide of a variety as we can.

That's very refreshing to hear, Robert. Thanks for replying. As for "built in audience," I'm talking teens, excepting for Christian home-schoolers and any with morals or class. :p Good luck everyone!

Thank you so much Robert for taking the time on a daily basis to update the DWF blog, and interact with the community of filmmakers who have been following the DWF15 selection on an hourly basis. Providing a platform like this is unheard of amongst festivals.

Thank you DWF for truly being different, and being a champion for us Independent Filmmakers.

As we continue to root for our film, the team over here at BARMY are still as optimistic as ever, and will continue to keep our fingers crossed, and our email inboxes refreshing ever 30 seconds. :)
